10 things and a giveaway
inspired by a post by grumperina and a lack of anything more interesting to show you:
10 knitterly things about me
1. i first learned to knit from a woman who hated me. 10 years ago, i was working in a nursing home and sporting a shaved head. one particularly grumpy resident liked to comment as i passed: "you look like a man!", or "you look disgusting with your hair like that!" at the top of her lungs, every time i passed her, 5 days a week. this REALLY bothered me, so made it a point to spend as much one on one time with her as possible, painting her nails, playing card games and eventually learning how to knit from her. she cried when i left that job a few years later.
2.i knit a few ugly garter stitch scarves in the first few years, but never learned how to cast on, bind off or purl. i had other people cast on or bind off for me.
3.i didn't knit a single stitch for 5 years, then suddenly i was dying to knit again, so i taught myself with the help of a few books.
4.i rarely knit from a pattern. i usually make a drawing, buy some yarn and wing it. i think this is an attention span problem, as i can never seem to stick to a pattern for long because it gets boring.
5.i have a shockingly small knitting book library. this consists of three barbara
walkers
, two
zimmermanns
, and a righetti
. i have purchased lots of knitting books in the past, but i never use them and end up selling them (refer to #4).
6.i don't like cables. there, i said it. i do love how they look, and i like admiring the cabling of others, but i feel like they make everything seem bulkier. seeing as i'm only 5'2" tall, anything that adds bulk only makes me look shorter.
7.i think lace knitting is the best thing ever. EVER! unfortunately i need lots of quiet, which is rare, to knit lace, so i don't get to do as much of it as i'd like.
8. i live dangerously close to webs. a lot of the time sometimes, i end up choosing yarn over things like food or car repairs because of this.
9.i knit almost everything from the top. i think it's the perfect way to knit, if you want things to fit properly.
10.i think the knitting blog world is one of the greatest things ever. a bunch of knitters being supportive, sharing ideas and being generally awesome, just because of a shared interest, makes me happy.
bored yet?
how about a little giveaway
this giveaway is open to anyone, in any country, and i will ship the items for free.

I have been reading your blog for a short time now. I had to giggle about the nursing home woman that hated you. I have an older relative who absolutely hates my nose ring too. "Why did you put that in your nose? It looks trashy."
Oh, a giveaway! I rarely win things. I will add my name to the list...I would like the two skeins of Noro. I have never knitted with Noro before and want to give it a whirl.
Ok, have a wonderful day!

I love your list! Especially #10, it's so true. And #4, I'm always quite impressed by what you create on your own, without patterns.
Oh, and I keep forgetting to mention this to you - I'm probably moving to your area at the end of this year! Just waiting to hear back from UMass about transferring for spring semester. Exciting!

the list is great. #4 would scare me - i have to have a pattern. if i try to wing it, it generally turns out bad, so patterns are a must for me. :)
as for the giveaway - i would like to be added to the list for rowan 38. thanks. :)

Your Giveaway is so fun! How nice of you to do this. I live in Alaska and it is getting SOOOO chilly here. I would love to use those two skeins of Noro to make a scarf like the one you did. I love the stripes of variagated yarn!

ditto to what amanda said about #4. patterns are a good thing for me!
i'd like to be added to the list for the rowan mag. thanks!
by the way, i made your leaf tee awhile back. super cute!

There has been a time or two when it came down to milk & bread vs. yarn. Sometimes yarn won. I really like your pattern for the tshirt. I saw it on Craftster and really liked it.
Giveaways are always such fun! Put me down for the 2 skeins of Noro.

I love this blog! I just played Frenchy in Grease, so I especially love the name - and the patterns are great.
I'd like to please be added to the list for the noro.

ooooh, item number one. I am so glad I stumbled over to your blog again I really think your work is lovely

i came in search of your purty lace scarf pattern that was on craftster (i've decided it is at least one xmas pressie, and maybe another birthday present for someone too); but oh dear lord i would *love* to be put down for either the noro or the rowan pattern book. Neither of which my studenty budget ever seem to stretch to *sigh*
There is probably a gentle preference for the noro though ;)
I understand the yarn over food thing. i got my first pair of clover needles the other day, sacrificing buying toilet paper (we are running low, but i'm pretty sure we'll last till next week... *crosses fingers*)
i'm not so sure about the not-following-patterns though. i find i learn so much from each pattern that i knit that i can't imagine never knitting from them.

Yay! I am the first one who wants that Rowan book (this HAS to account for something, right?!)
I still smart over moving away from Webs before I knew better. (ah to be young and ignorant) I would SO buy yarn over food. (Then I would go to Haymarket and have a sandwich. Or maybe Bueno for a burrito...or Herrell's for some ice cream.....or that thai place near deals and steals...damn. the food there is good)

Put me down for the Rowan book. I've always been curious about their patterns.
Great blog!

Came via thelace scarf on Craftster...
Hehehe. I think #2 applies to most of us. *shame*
And I should be ashamed to admit that the only reason I'm commenting is because theres a giveaway. >>; Put me down for Noro.
I'd buy yarn over food if I could somehow tweak my digestive system to digest yarn. But only scratchy acrylic because wool is too expensive to eat.

I've been reading your blog for a little while now, and I love your style! I'm always nervous to post comments, but I absolutely love what you post! The photo of the pink lace scarf tied at the neck is gorgeous!
Being a broke college student, free stuff is wonderful, so please put me down for the Noro!
Thanks!

You are so right about the world of knitting blogs! I love this community ;)
Great contest idea. I would love to be in the running for both, if possible ;)

If I don't win the Rowan 38 from here, I'll probably never get it... and I am dying to knit Brocade! So please, put me on the list for Rowan 38.
I love the scarf! Oh, and the top. And I think it's awesome that you made it a point to bond with the woman who treated you like that... not many would. People like you make the world liveable. :-)
I've been known to buy yarn over food... though I've never gone hungry because of it. Just have had to eat crap I don't really like a time or two!

I'm in the middle of making the leaf T....even though it's getting cold outside. It'll be so pretty, I can't wait to finish it, but I have some priority knits for other people to do first....darn!
I'd love to be put down for the Rowan mag.
Thanks!

Noro - please come to me.
My nearest yarn store doesn't carry it. And being unemployed means I wouldn't likely be able to buy it anyway. Winter is coming and I need a scarf.

Wow...giveaway...
I need the Rowan 38, my lys doesn't carry Rowan...
Thanks!

Wow, I am so jealous that you live close to Webs. I am still trying to figure out a family vacation that involves stopping there.
What great giveaway items. I would be happy to win either one of them!

I adore this meme! What a great way to get to really know about another knitter!
I'm with you on #7!!! I love me some lace!
Great contest as well! I'd love to be in the running for the rowan! :)

I love your blog! Have never left a comment for a blogger before, but I have also never had the pleasure of knitting anything that wasn't done with manmade fiber - and am so very anxious to try to the "good stuff". Finances won't allow for that until sometime next year, so if I am lucky enough to be your winner - you will hear the happy dance from here. I have become very adept at Aran and am working on lace now. Looking forward to starting socks in January. Ahhhh, knitting is bliss.

There is one enchanting pattern in Rowan 38 at least - I checked through them all - and it is Braiden, #5 in the EcoRomantic section.
I have my fingers crossed to be the winner of the magazine. (Making it very difficult to type OR to knit.)

I love your Noro scarf. I'll probably end up buying the yarn myself if I don't win. :D

I'd love to have the Rowan!
