my first sock

people, i have finally knit a sock.

i don't know what kept me from knitting one before. maybe it was the fear of the unknown, coupled with my inability to follow directions. i've knit several sock cuffs and partial legs before, but gave up well before the heel for one reason or another. now i get it. there are many reasons to love sock knitting, my favorite being the extreme portability of a small project. i see smaller totes and purses in my future.

the pattern is elfine's socks. they're knit toe up using magic loop starting with a figure 8 cast on, which i had always feared (it was easier than i thought). the only change i made was using a twisted rib instead of the garter cuff. the yarn i'm using is fleece artist merino sock in moss, it's pretty but a little fuzzy and not as soft as the koigu i'll be using on my next pair. um, that is, if i can finish the second sock.
i haven't forgotton about my sweater, i worked on it for a little bit with my coffee this morning. someday, i will finish.

i'm off to the outdoor flea market! have a great sunday!

in my last entry, i mentioned that i've been casting on like crazy for new projects. i'll spare you the teeny-tiny beginnings of sweaters. i've started 2 new ones, but 2 of the other projects were suitable for carrying around... [Read More]

Bravo!! It looks great. :D

Congrats! Hope you don't get second sock syndrome ;)

Bravo! I can't believe this was your first sock -- it looks fantastic! This is such a beautiful pattern, and really perfect in the Moss color.

Your first sock is gorgeous! I love the pattern and the green. :)

Congrats! There's no turning back now...

Hooookay. The pic of the sock and the boot?

Secksay!

I'm just sayin'.

Ok, that's your first sock? WOW, nice work!

That's a mighty fine first sock! Beautiful!

Beautiful! I'm looking to get into socks, too, but haven't taken the plunge.... I love that color green!

Congrats on your first sock! That green is fantastic. And I love that you're already planning your second pair -- that's a true sock knitter speaking. :)

And it's a beautiful first sock too! You did GREAT! Congrats. Fun, isn't it?

Tina J.

that's one impressive sock for your first. thanks for the link to the pattern, i want to start on a pair of toe-ups.

that is a very nice photo shoot. props for the effort.

Yay!! First sock! There's no stopping you now! And you're clearly a natural at the sock thing... the color/pattern/yarn is a perfect match! And I, too, love the photo shoot. :)

I'm so happy you have joined the cult! the portability is awesome. come winter, you won't want to wear anything else.

the elfines (and toe-ups in general -- like top down, but smaller!) have always been a favorite. congrats!

p.s. re: email from 8 bilion years ago: yes, ali told me about raphy. v. jealous!!

Fantastic first sock! I agree with Megan that you are a natural! I can't wait to see what pattern/color combo you chose next!

Those socks look fabulous!!! Love the color and pattern.

Excellent work! I still want to WANT to knit socks, but I'm not quite there yet...
