here, have a hat.
hi there!
i can't show you most of what i've been up to, but i do have a new hat pattern in today's classic elite webletter. (ravelry link)
after i finished knitting it, i was having one of those low self-esteem days, so i begged the girlfriend to let me photograph her wearing it instead. even though it's not the style of hat that she would normally wear, she looked great in it, and now the pictures are in the webletter. i've been giggling all day just thinking about the girlfriend's face arriving in a bunch of email boxes this afternoon.
This pattern was written with the feature that i've always added to my slouchy hats. the garter stitch band has 4 short rows wedged in between the purl rows. This makes for a wider band at the front, all the way back to the ears, then a narrow band at the back of the neck. i think the hat sits more comfortably this way, and i thought it was about time that i actually wrote it into a pattern.
i hope you like it!

Wow, that's great! Gorgeous pattern and model, though she claims these types of hats are not her style :). Great feature with the short rows, and it's wonderful that you took the time to think of it and write it into the pattern!

I love the way you used short rows for the band - it does look great! And I thought the whole point of a girlfriend was to have someone around to model knitwear when you don't feel like it, or is that just me :P

She does look gorgeous!
Did she demand sole ownership of the hat after seeing the photos? I certainly would have. ;)

So, you've solved the scrunchy, sweaty, thickly, way too long feeling of the hat on the back of the neck. Yay! I'll be trying the short row idea out on my next hat. (I need hats for our spa and they need to be shorter around the neck!)
Hoorah! Keep up the great thinkin'!

I think Girlfriend ought to consider wearing hats like this a lot more often--it's very flattering on her! I'm intriguing by the short row band, and it's a very pretty little design. Beautiful work!
