the week in pictures
i have to admit that i've been considering ditching my blog over the last few months, but i think what i've realized is that i really like blogging. i think that i was just feeling like i could only write if there was some finished object to talk about, and i'm often forced to wait 6 months to a year to talk about the things that i've knit. so, i spent some time thinking about the blogs i like to read, and you know what? they're not just parades of finished objects. sometimes they are just moments captured on film (or some digital storage device), some occasionally link to favorite things, some cover the love of various crafts. my life does have more than just knitting going. well, sometimes it's just knitting. :)
anyway, i'll be back more often here. i'm aiming for 2-3 posts a week, even if sometimes the post is just a photograph.
monday
spent half of my day off working on a new design and the other half finishing up this. it's the tea leaves cardigan that i started for myself many moons ago. everything is done except for 2.5 inches of sleeve and the blocking. i was hoping to finish it mid-week, but i ended up sick and without the energy to knit.
tuesday
did i tell you that i'm learning to crochet? i'm taking a class with my friend/co-worker elisabeth for the next few weeks. 2010 is my year of learning new things, even if i'm terrible at them. so far i've learned to use a rigid heddle loom, which i'm only ok at. i've learned to spin on a wheel, and i'm really terrible at it, despite having a great teacher. i'm hoping crochet will be the new fiber art that'll restore my creative self-esteem. i hope. i ended up going to my class when i was sick this week and as a result, i don't remember how to half-double crochet. at least i think that's what we covered. *shrug*
wednesday and thursday
these days were a blur of cold medicine and bad t.v. i worked for 2.5 hours, then didn't get off the couch for a day and a half.
friday
today i felt a lot better, just not quite 100%. i've been a non-smoker for 8+ months and the real difference i've noticed is that i get better so much faster when i'm sick. my colds no longer settle in my chest and turn into a month long cough. i get sick, i feel like crap for a few days, then i'm better. i can handle that!
i was dying to knit after a few days without feeling like it. instead of finishing my tea leaves cardi, i ended up casting on for a hat in madelinetosh vintage in"composition book gray", which is a grayed purple that i'm crazy about at the moment. this is a hat pattern that i'll be putting out any day now. the pattern is all done, i just have to put it all together with the pictures. i'll try to get it up on sunday.

Comments
That hat looks really cool! Also cool is the healing-time difference since you quit. Good for you!

Congrats on 8 months smoke free! It's great to see you blogging again, I just bought the pattern for your lovely Tea Leaves cardigan and can't wait to get started. A friend in my knittin group is making one too and hers looks awesome! :)g

LOVE the hat! Can't wait to try the pattern!

Yay for more blog posts! And glad to hear you're feeling better :)
Posted by: Melissa | March 12, 2010 07:53 PM
Remembering crochet stitches isn't so important as being able to understand instructions for how to do the stitches again. I have the "Teaching Yourself Visually: Crochet" book, and it's a pretty good way to "remember" how to do things like half-double crochet.
Good luck!
Posted by: iris | March 12, 2010 07:54 PM
The color on your Tea Leaves is super wonderful!
As for sucking at all these new skills...just practice. You'll get better at all of them with practice.
Posted by: Lisa | March 12, 2010 08:11 PM
YĆ©!!! I missed you so much! So glad that you come back. It's like not seeing a friend for a while! So get well, take care, and looking forward to see that hat!!
Posted by: chantelaine | March 12, 2010 08:32 PM
you're so good at crochet though! if you want, we can talk about half double crochets tomorrow, although i'm not so sure i'm great at it myself. i'm glad we're stumbling through together, if only for the promise of a little joe after class.
also everyone stinks at spinning for like a year after they start. some of us stink at it for longer (myself included). we'll start spinning together when i have my own place and you'll get awesome at it with practice!
Posted by: elisabeth | March 12, 2010 08:55 PM
We should hang out and suck at crochet together sometime.
I love reading about works-in-progress, even hints. Glad to hear you're not quitting your blog.
And hey, I meant to say congrats...I read an awesome blog post about your tea leaves cardigan recently...hope it sells a lot of books! :-)

I love the new hat pattern! And your tea leaves is gorgeous! I can't wait to make mine. It's going to be purple.
Hurray for trying new things. Crochet is easy and you will get the hang of it in no time. I taught myself.
I am still afraid of trying to warp my rigid heddle loom by myself. It's buried under a mountain of fiber. But that is one of my 2010 goals, weave something.
I love spinning, but it takes away from my knitting time. I just tend to put my handspuns in my Etsy Shop when I am done.
Posted by: Oiyi | March 13, 2010 12:00 AM
What a cool hat! I taught myself to crochet last night - I managed a wonky granny square and then went to bed. :)
Posted by: Yarndude | March 13, 2010 12:04 AM
That's a fantastic looking hat. What colorway is your sweater? It looks great too!
Posted by: GinkgoKnits | March 13, 2010 02:06 AM
Of course you don't have to just blog about finished projects! This was a great post :)
p.s. I'm totally using your non-longer-smoker story to harass my heavily-smoking aunt with it. ;)
Posted by: Ivana | March 13, 2010 05:42 AM
It's good that you decide to continue to blog. After a year, I deleted my blog, but then, came back to it. I missed the Blog Roll feature (that allows me to read so many nice blog like yours!) too much ;-) I don't write often but it's nice when I do! Nice hat and look forward to seeing your Tea Leaves cardigan!
Posted by: Maryse | March 13, 2010 07:06 AM
That hat is beautiful! I will be first in line for the pattern.
I think it's much easier to learn to crochet or knit when you already know the other one. You're going to be great, so don't give up when you crochet something that looks like a rhombus or a kidney. It just takes practice. And that's the same with spinning. When I got my wheel, I was a total wreck. Someone told me to spin for just 20 minutes a day, and I can't tell you how right they were. It gives you time to practice without getting overwhelmed or upset. Stick with it!

Yo can't wait to see the TLC--just a beautiful pattern ya got there, missus!
Posted by: Heather | March 13, 2010 10:32 AM
i hear you on the blogging! esp when all we were doing was book knitting, keeping up 2 was a p.i.t.a., so i don't blame you! keep it up, though, and do it when you want, not because you feel obligated.
i desperately love the hat, and that color, too.

Just recently discovered your blog when I purchased the Tea Leaves Cardigan pattern. Tough to find Madelinetosh out in knitting land. I wanted to order the original color--Tannehill--2nd choice was Composition Book--couldn't get either in the necessary amount so I opted for Vintage Frame--is that its name?? Anyway, I am so looking forward to starting the cardigan and really love your hat pattern.
Glad you won't be giving up your blog!!

Yay, so glad you decided not to ditch the blog! I recently came back to blogging after a long hiatus, and I am enjoying it again. Just a photograph for a post is fine, especially since your photos even make Ny-Quil look pretty!

Dear Melissa,
I am so happy that you decided not to ditch your blog and not only continue with knitterly related posts, but one's that aren't knitting related as well! Your blog was one of the first blogs I came across, and I have enjoyed following you immensely. You are so very inspiring, no matter what you are talking about! I know I am just a stranger in a far away land, but I really wanted to come out and tell you how much you're blog means to me.
I'm glad you're feeling better, and I also wanted to stop by and say congrats!!! on having quit smoking and still having stuck to it. I remember when you first blogged about quitting, and It's so neat to hear that you've kept it up.
Cheers!
