rae of sunshine
thanks so much for all your sweet stories and messages. they totally made me cry, but they also made me feel a lot less crazy for crying like i did for so many days. we took stella's loss pretty hard, as did our other cat, buddy. he had never been without a feline companion, and in the days after she was first gone, he seemed to become depressed, pretty much meowing and lying under the coffee table all day.
so, taking the advice of other cat-people, we went to our local shelter to find buddy a friend. honestly, i felt like i really wasn't ready for another cat so soon, but then we met this little girl. rae is little tortie kitten that had just had a leg amputated a few days earlier. we loved her sweet little face, and the fact that just a few days after a pretty major surgery, she was already hopping around to say hello. we took her home the next day, and since then, rae and buddy have become SUPER best friends. they run around and play together, nap together and wreck stuff together. they're a perfect match. it's great to see our buddy happy again.
we still miss stella lots. it's still hard. rae makes us think about her every day because she has adopted all of stella's favorite sleeping spots as her own. but, kitten antics do distract us from the teary-ness a bit now.
i went almost an entire week without knitting there, but i've picked it up again and am on a finishing spree. here are a few glimpses of a vest in madelinetosh vintage in glazed pecan. i haven't written a pattern yet, but if there's enough interest, i will.
i've got a few others that are waiting for buttons or ends to be woven in, but i'll save those for my next post.

Wow, the vest is just great. I would love to make one (down to the color!) Rae looks like a sweetie too.

I may be totally biased by my love of cats but that is seriously about the cutest kitten in the world! It's kind of bittersweet when the new little ones come in after a loss but it's wonderful that you're able to share the love. The vest is great, too!

oh, how adorable!
strange parallels. our new little kitten molly (adopted a few months ago) has also helped me handle cole-bunny's death. the cuteness, the snuggling... exactly what i need right now. even the craziness; it's distracting!

Oh, the kitty is darling. Why did she have to have her leg amputated? There's no question of replacing a beloved animal member of the family, but it is sweet to make a little room for some new love, eh? The vest is gorgeous. I'd be very interested in the pattern.

I am glad that Rae (cute name for a cutie) has brought a new happiness to your family. May you always cherish your memories of your girl Stella.
All of your knitting is interesting to me. I would love to see the vest in print.

Oh, very much interest for a pattern here! Very beautiful vest!

Aw, our little furry child almost had to have a leg amputated (before we adopted him) but my boy is a vet so got talked into a $3k surgery to save his leg. Rae is really sweet looking.
Also that vest looks really cheerful and awesome - love the colour choice too.

Sorry to hear about Stella, it has nearly been 3 years since my little Katie died, and I still nearly cry at the thought of the cuddles she used to give - I say nearly cos I quickly think of something else! I still have her photos running on the sidebar of the computer.
I love the vest, and would really love the pattern. Am I right thinking it could be a good fit for a small bust?

Very Pretty vest. Sorry to hear about your Stella. Buddy & Rae look cute together. Take care.

What a sweet kitten! I love that she is getting along with Buddy so well, cheering him up :). That top picture of the two of them is SO sweet!

Oh my goodness, she is such a sweetie! What a lovely addition to your family. We ended up having to do the same thing when we lost our sweet Patches (one year ago yesterday): our male cat was absolutely despondent, and within five days we ended up bringing home Anjanka from the shelter. They are definitely friends now, and it was really hard for a while with Patches' loss for all of us, but new kitty cuddles sure do go a long way, therapy wise. Congrats again on the new little one.

Good for you! Helping that sweet little kitty out will help. They can never replace the lost cat, but they will lift yours and your other cats spirit.
Glad to see you are knitting again! Your vest is lovely. The color is great. Knitting can also be a good support as you grieve.
Wishing you the best!

Of course it's hard to move on, a pet is totally a family member!! So sad. But congratulations on bringing home a wonderful little cat that needed a home and another feline friend. And your vest is stunning! I absolutely love it.

Hurray for Rae! She's cute and spunky. I'm glad the two cats are already pals.
And the new vest? Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

My vet always told me that torti's seem to have an extra dose of personality. (Did you know that they are always female?)

the vest is beautiful, and so is Rae.

Awe! I'm sorry to hear about Stella. Kitties are the best. I'm very partial to torties, but Rae seems to have one of the cutest faces I've seen and that's so sweet she can distract you and Buddy.
Love the vest too.

Rae is such a cutie! I'm glad she's there to help. I too had to get another cat before I was ready; after Pan died, Harold was So Lonely, not having been alone in ten years, I had to get a friend for him. Then when he died a year later, I had to get another new one for her! It's a long story, but has a happy ending at least.
I love that vest--I vote for the pattern, please.

Hey... I'm having a bit of problem with the with the layout of the page. For some reason the text block overlaps the margins. I don't know if it's just me or have other people mentioned this? Just wanted to let you know in case you've been updating the site. Thanks! How to save a marriage

I would love to knit this vest, if you wouldn't mind. Can you write up a pattern for sale? (Or, can I test knit it for you?)
Besides, your kitten pictures are adorable.

What a beautiful kitten! Love the vest as well!

I'm not a vest person, but it looks like it would be great in early fall/late spring.
I love Rae's face - she looks so curious! Why did her leggie-leg need to be amputated? I love the picture of her and buddy on the bed. We just got a new kitten. Our older cat has never been around other cats and hissed, but we reintroduced them slowly and now they play chase through the house and touch noses. It's so sweet and makes me happy they have each other.

The kitty is precious and you are to be commended for adopting plus adopting so soon after a loss. On a totally different topic, I love the vest and would definitely be interested in a pattern.

Oh, what a sweet pea! It's so hard to say good-bye to a beloved pet; at the same time, it's wonderful to give another kitty a chance at a good life.

I have a cat who had a leg amputated at some point in her life. I don't know when, because she was dumped at our house out in the country. Although my grandson calls her Crackers (his favorite snack), we call her Peggy. Peg's the Mommy now and the Matriarch of the crew. She is absolutely the most loving, yet toughest cat on the place. I love her so much. Very glad that you can love another kitty like her!

What a little sweetheart. I'm so sorry for your loss of Stella - I lost my Riley around the same time. We're hoping to bring a new kitten home soon, too.
Don't you just love Madeline Tosh yarns? I'm working on a sweater pattern right now and had to re-knit the yoke. Frustrating, but I got to work with the dk yarn again. Your vest looks beautiful.

I just started reading your blog the other day (after I finished a September Circle and realized I love your designs), and I wanted to express both my sorrow for your loss and joy at your new kitty.
Big hugs to you. I lost my big sweet kittyboy three years ago and I still miss him every day. It was hard on all of us in the family, and we just now recovered enough to add a new (rescue) kitty to the family.

That little kitten is so sweet, nice to see Buddy has taken to her so well. And that vest? Oh yes, pattern please! I love the photo with Rae walking past it hanging on the doorknob. Brilliant.

ohh it is darling!
Pretty lucky that your other cat has taken it in so well!
When I lost my cat, and I got another, my mothers cat never liked it (though he never did like my first cat either).. oh well.
Loving the look of that waistcoat - and the colour!
