new top-down sweater pattern : tereza pullover

will you be in rhinebeck this weekend? cecily and i will be signing copies of weekend hats
in the carolina homespun booth at 1pm on saturday. stop by and say hi!

i don't end up with many patterns in magazines, since i almost always forget to write down submission deadlines, and never submit... plus there's that whole pesky full-tiime job thing, eating away at all my knitting time.
but, i do have a sweater in the next issue of knitscene!
the winter 2011 issue will be available around 10/25/2011 and among the many beautiful designs you'll find my tereza pullover (ravelry link)
knit in a bulky yarn at 13 sts to 4", this sweater flies off the needles! it's knit from the top-down, in one piece, so it leaves lots of room for trying on and customizing as you go.

p.s. amazon finally started shipping weekend hats yesterday. pre-order no more! hooray!

back again

the last year has been crazy, to say the least. i have lost pets and family members, gone through a break-up, wrote a second book
with cecily, got healthy by juicing and riding bikes, lost 30 pounds, said goodbye to a dear friend who's been there for me through it all, worked a full-time job, a part-time job and still managed to complete a ton of design work. it's a little overwhelming to see it all written down there! but, life is good, i have tons of exciting design projects coming up, and i still find time to ride bikes and spend time with my lovely friends. i am grateful for the last year. it has been hard, but i have learned and changed so much. hopefully, for the better!
over the next month i will have lots and lots of new designs to show you. some are part of more collaborations with my dear friend cecily, some are independent releases. i am back to show you the first of them...and i plan to be back a lot more to share what i'm up to.

almost autumn is 2 patterns in one, designed to take 2 skeins of the plucky knitter primo fingering. sarah is an absolute joy to work with, and i am so excited to be able to release another pattern in one of her beautiful yarns.
with 2 skeins you can knit the loop scarf and beret.

new pattern: vine loop

apologies to anyone that has left a blog comment that hasn't shown up right away or needed a response. my spam comment filter was catching honest, knitterly comments, but letting obnoxious "nice site" spam through, so i wasn't receiving emails letting me know you left one. i will be checking and approving any comments from now on. sorry about that!

i have been burning the candle at both ends lately. too busy working, knitting and doing fun things like a new england knits
book signing at slater mill yesterday, to have even a moment to blog about any of it. but, i will use this rare free moment to show you a new knit/pattern that i finished last month.

new pattern: vine loop

new pattern: vine loop

new pattern: vine loop

i feel special. last month i had the chance to work with a very special yarn from one of my favorite dyers, the plucky knitter. not only is sarah just plain sweet, she dyes up some beautiful colorways. my hands down favorite is the one below, called dark & stormy. i designed this loop scarf to use a bit less than 2 skeins (about 300 yds) of the brand-new primo worsted. i've been keeping it under wraps until the yarn becomes available. and now, you'll be able to get you hands on some tonight at 4pm est!

this pattern is knit in the round and can be worn doubled to keep your neck extra warm. it's pretty rib and lace pattern makes it nice enough for indoor wear. i wear this about 5x a week and often keep it on all day at work when it's chilly inside. it is my very favorite of my accessory designs. i hope you like it too. like my other self-published designs, the pattern includes both written and charted instructions because i know some knitters prefer one over the other. pattern is available as a pdf download for $5.

queue it on ravelry here. or you can buy it now.

leaf beret

i'm predictable, if anything. :)

the preview is up for the next issue of knit.1, coming out on may 5. i have a little beret with a double leaf design in this issue, knit in a really pretty shade of cey's cotton bam boo called "turkish tile".

i'll spare you the crappy picture i snapped of it before mailing it off. look at the pretty one from the magazine instead.

the whole issue looks great! tanis and faith have done a fabulous job as editors once again.

Bea

bea.jpg

The pattern for Bea is now available for purchase. Bea uses 1 skein of Twinkle Soft Chunky and I was able to knit 2 as written from just 1 skein. Knit in super bulky yarn on us17 needles, this hat flies off the needles. The hat has a large leaf motif that repeats 4 times around the head, because obviously I am not over knitting leaves yet.

I will be donating 50% of the proceeds from the sale of this pattern to the pancreatic cancer action network throughout 2009.(update:thanks so much everyone, i was able to donate just over $150 thanks to your purchases).

I had this whole plan for a post about pancreatic cancer, and how it has affected the people I love, but every time I tried to write it, it just made me overwhelmed with sadness. So here is an abbreviated version:

grandma and melissa 1976.jpg

"B" was my grandmother. She was tough, crafty, and an amazing polish cook. She took care of everyone, even if it was sometimes a thankless job. She lived in the same neighborhood as me, and I saw her every day of my young life. Though she tried to hide it, one day she started feeling ill. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer soon after, and within 11 weeks, she was gone. Just like that. Stolen from me and my family, by stupid cancer. Although, at 12 years old, this wasn't the first time I had experienced the death of a loved one, it was the hardest. Her absence was just so obvious in my everyday life.

Her memory is very much alive though. Over 2 decades later, her sisters still talk about her all the time, stories both sad and silly, that I never had the chance to hear from her.

I cringe when pancreatic cancer is mentioned in the news, or conversations. It seems to be an especially cruel cancer, with symptoms rarely showing until it's in an advanced stage. And although it clearly can be hereditary, specific genetic markers have yet to be found.

A few months ago, another family member was given the same awful diagnosis. We are all sad, but hopeful. Although there's not much I can do to fix it, raising a little money for an organization that specifically deals with this cancer certainly can't hurt.

You can purchase the Bea hat pattern as a pdf download for $4.50 by clicking the link below.

If big leafy hats aren't your thing, but you still want to give, there's an online donation form on on their website.

I'll be making the donations every 2 months and then updating the total amount donated here.

a slouch for all seasons

provence slouch back

slouch for all seasons

bamboo slouch

my hat pattern is featured in this week's classic elite web-letter!

i knit both of these versions in the middle of may.

the white was first, using classic elite's provence. i really loved how it came out, but i just knew it was going to look really great on my step-sister. it did, so i knit another one in bam boo, since it has great drape for this type of hat. i'd never used a bamboo yarn before, but i certainly will again.

since cotton and bamboo can lose shape with wear, i went down 3 needle sizes for the ribbed band, to combat stretch. you may want to up the needle size on the band for other fibers though.

you can queue it on ravelry here

well, i hope you like it!

also, my tilted duster is dry, dry, dry! i'm just figuring out which buttons to use. after a long slump of once-a-month posting, it looks like this little blog might actually have regular content.

see you soon,
melissa
